Caring for your ink

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and remains vibrant for years to come. Follow these steps to protect your new piece of art:

1. The First 24-48 Hours

  • Leave the Bandage On: Your tattoo will be covered with a protective bandage or film. Leave it on for the time recommended by your artist (typically 2-24 hours).

  • Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo to prevent infection.

  • Clean Gently: Once you remove the bandage, wash the tattoo with warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Use clean hands (not a washcloth or sponge) to gently cleanse away plasma, ink, and any residue.

  • Pat Dry: Use a clean paper towel or a soft, lint-free cloth to pat the area dry. Do not rub.

2. Days 2-7: Initial Healing Stage

  • Apply Aftercare Ointment: Apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare product (like a fragrance-free, water-based lotion or tattoo ointment). Do not over-apply, as this can suffocate the skin.

  • Avoid Re-Bandaging: Unless directed by your artist, leave the tattoo uncovered so it can breathe.

  • Moisturize Sparingly: Keep the tattoo moisturized, but not greasy. Apply a light layer of lotion 2-3 times daily.

  • Avoid Picking & Scratching: Your tattoo may scab or peel. This is normal, but resist the urge to pick or scratch. Let it shed naturally.

3. Weeks 2-4: Ongoing Healing

  • Keep It Clean & Moisturized: Continue washing and moisturizing as needed. The peeling phase may be complete, but the skin beneath is still healing.

  • Avoid Soaking: No swimming, hot tubs, or long baths until fully healed (about 3-4 weeks). Showers are fine, but avoid direct, high-pressure water on the tattoo.

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Sun exposure can fade and damage a healing tattoo. Once healed, always apply sunscreen to protect your tattoo.

4. Long-Term Care

  • Moisturize Regularly: Keep your tattoo hydrated to maintain its vibrancy.

  • Use Sunscreen: Protect your tattoo from UV rays with SPF 30 or higher whenever it’s exposed to the sun.

  • Touch-Ups (If Needed): If you notice any fading or areas that didn’t heal properly, consult your artist about a touch-up.

What to Avoid

❌ No swimming, hot tubs, or soaking the tattoo.
❌ No picking, scratching, or peeling the scabs.
❌ No heavy workouts or excessive sweating on the tattooed area.
❌ No harsh soaps, scented lotions, or abrasive scrubbing tools.

When to Contact Your Artist

If you notice signs of infection (redness, swelling, warmth, pus) or if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your artist. Proper care ensures your tattoo heals properly and remains as bold and beautiful as the day it was done.
